The ASTM D36/D36M standard test method uses the ring-and-ball apparatus to determine the softening point of bitumen. It involves heating bitumen samples in a controlled temperature rise while a steel ball rests on top of them, and the softening point is the temperature at which the ball falls through the softened bitumen.
